AbstractThis short book discusses ways parents and teachers can cooperate to prevent some of the behavioral problems common to middle school and high school students. To help parents and teachers, it offers a progressive discipline code, called the "Parental Intervention Plan," or PIP, in which both parents and teachers jointly assume responsibility for preventing behavioral problems. The purpose of the PIP is to prevent behavioral problems, to discipline students at an early manageable stage, and to enhance the educational process, not to humiliate students. The PIP costs the school and district nothing and works with children of all ages. When the PIP is implemented properly, four benefits are apparent: (1) Parents visit the school often and grow comfortable inside the school building as communication and understanding between teachers and parents improve; (2) there are no suspensions, and parental visits to the school result in no instruction time being lost; (3) the school's public image improves; and (4) students learn that parents and teachers are working together to help them make the most of their educational opportunities. The book also offers guidelines to principals on setting up a PIP, cooperating with parents and teachers, and dealing with common student behavioral problems. (Contains a subject index). (WFA)
