| Abstract | A study addressed how teachers' practices influenced students' perceptions of control in social and academic domains and what teacher practices were related to student perceptions of control. To relate teacher practices to student perceptions of control this paper: (1) defines the concept of control and describes theoretical and empirical concepts that relate to it; (2) provides background on the relationship of control to other significant classroom outcomes; (3) describes the role of environments in control development; and (4) links the concept of control to the classroom environment. Data collected from 19 third- and fourth-grade teachers and their students included qualitative narrative records of each classroom and students' scores on various self-perception measures. Practices that appeared to result in more favorable classroom environments included: respect for and sensitivity to individual need and growth; predictability and teachers' structuring of information about the environment; and opportunities for students to practice self-regulation.
