AbstractResults of a survey concerning accreditation are presented based on 374 responses provided by chief executive officers and other college officials. The findings, which were statistically adjusted to produce national estimates, provide information on: respondents' experience with the accreditation process; issues concerning institutional accreditation and specialized accreditation; and the way that the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation's Assembly of National Postsecondary Education Organizations can work to support and improve the accreditation process. Findings include: 90% of respondents felt that institutional accreditation provides a useful index of institutional quality; about 13,600 programs were accredited by specialized accrediting bodies at three-quarters of the nation's campuses; 75% of respondents reported that specialized accreditation provides a useful index of program quality; and 70% of respondents agreed that most of their programs could benefit from the self-study required by specialized accrediting agencies. A facsimile of the questionnaire is appended, along with a description of the stratification design, weighting procedure, and response rates. (SW)
