AbstractVarious aspects of the writing across the curriculum program at Somerset County College (SCC) are discussed in these four presentations. Introductory comments by Myrna Smith trace the development of the writing across the curriculum program at SCC. Angela Bodino's presentation, "Writing as Learning Across the Curriculum", explores the theory of writing as a powerful learning tool which has stimulated the writing-across-curriculum movement in America, focusing on the purposes of writing, the place of writing throughout the curriculum, the special characteristics of writing as a way of learning, correctness in writing, and the role of critics and evaluators in the writing process. Olivia Bissell's presentation, "Who/How/Why/What," describes SCC's 3-year project to involve all 90 faculty members at the college in a series of ten weekly 2-hour workshops so that they could experience process-oriented writing, discover its potential for learning, and use writing for learning in their own classroom. Next, "Lessons of the Project," by Barbara Adams, presents insights drawn from the project, highlighting the importance of collegewide support and involvement; initial emphasis on influencing faculty; faculty experiencing personally the connection between writing and learning and the value of writing in their own discipline; and creating collegewide consensus on acceptable standards of college-level writing. Concluding comments are provided by Myrna Smith. (LAL)
