Based on the discussion of the professional image of the library profession initiated by the inter-association AG Personalentwicklung (Working Group on Personnel Development) and considering a current alumni study of the HTWK Leipzig and requirement profiles of job postings, we address the question, how broadly and deeply knowledge of classical library tasks still needs to be taught. We find that they are still among the main tasks of graduates and remain relevant at least in the medium term. Furthermore, we postulate that in a changed environment, a basic understanding of library principles remains essential for all graduates. We conclude that competencies pertaining to the cross-divisional core of the librarian identity must continue to be part of the compulsory curriculum, which reasonably remain to be cross-divisional, but that the development of action competencies in individual areas can be reserved for a part of the students within the framework of individual profile formation. The specific content taught in those fields must be constantly adapted to changing requirements. Short-term relevant requirements should be met by making the curricula more flexible in part, while the long-term development of the programs should be oriented towards persistent basic requirements. From today's perspective, these basic requirements also include IT skills or library pedagogy, which have established themselves as key competencies in the Leipzig curriculum."
